Edinburgh Airport renews Oracle Database support contract with Spinnaker Support

DENVER, CO, 28 April 2021 – Spinnaker Support, the premier global provider of enterprise software support services for Oracle, SAP, and Salesforce, today announces the airport, which previously relied on Oracle’s own support, has saved over £500,000 with Spinnaker Support and now receives ticket response within minutes.

Edinburgh Airport, which handled 14.7 million passengers in 2019, has again renewed its third-party Oracle support contract with Spinnaker Support. The award-winning -party software support from Spinnaker Support enabled Edinburgh Airport to reduce its Oracle Database maintenance spend by 60% allowing funds to be reinvested into remote working projects.

The sixth-largest airport in the UK, with 227 routes and 37 airlines, Edinburgh Airport is highly dependent on its Oracle Database, which is core to the airport’s smooth operation, ensuring that passengers and their belongings safely arrive at their planned destinations. Ensuring the security and maintenance of this operation-critical Oracle Database is deemed a high priority at Edinburgh Airport.

Due to a stable technical stack and a long-term strategy of reduced dependence on Oracle’s upgrade path, Edinburgh Airport’s leadership team decided to step away from Oracle-provided support to reduce cost outlay and seek faster support ticket response times. Five years after initially partnering with Spinnaker Support, and amid a pandemic, Edinburgh Airport has further extended this existing partnership.

Pre-Covid, when dealing with tens of millions of passengers, Edinburgh Airport measured its initial ticket response in days through Oracle’s self-service portal. Moving to Spinnaker Support, this approach was reframed – tickets are now responded to in minutes by an experienced, pre-assigned engineer.

Denis McIlroy, Head of IT at Edinburgh Airport, commented: “We initially engaged with Spinnaker Support to increase our flexibility and reduce support fees. The pandemic had a predictable impact on the aerospace industry, putting a number of workers on furlough and increasing strain on the airport.

“Spinnaker Support has not only been incredibly reliable but has also continued to prove their excellence and knowledge around our Oracle Database. Ticket response time due to their 24/7 remote specialists is measured in minutes and speedy resolutions means we can concentrate on our core business.”

Edinburgh Airport’s Oracle environment is hosted off-site and is supported by Spinnaker Support remotely. The Airport has access to Spinnaker Support’s highly qualified engineers during UK working hours, with a global network of responsive engineers available 24/7. Due to the airport’s infrastructure configuration, a limited number of IT staff are available onsite to support their Oracle technologies and Database environments.

“The picture that Edinburgh Airport paints with Oracle is by no means an isolated one,” commented Martin Biggs, VP & GM EMEA at Spinnaker Support. “We speak to many organisations that pay cumulatively increasing costs for what appears to be ‘limited’ support. With Covid-19 putting increasing pressure on organisations to find cost savings wherever feasible, being able to get more for less with third-party support is a logical conclusion.

“We’re excited to be continuing our work with Edinburgh Airport. Our engineers and customer success teams have worked extremely closely with the Airport’s IT team. There’s a real partnership between us, and the team at Edinburgh Airport values us like an extension to their own IT team.”
